HARARE – South Africa’s top selling weekly, Sunday Times, is discontinuing its Southern Africa edition because of rising production costs, a company executive has confirmed.
The newspaper’s Southern Africa edition, sold on the streets in regional capitals such as Harare and Lusaka every Sunday, will be replaced with a South African edition within a fortnight.
Sunday Times is the flagship weekly for the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE)-quoted Avusa Media and had gained respectable readership in the region for its punchy political reports spiced with juicy stories on the shenanigans of South African, regional and international personalities.
It has, however, failed to attract meaningful advertising from governments and companies outside South Africa. It is edited by Susan Smuts, a South African national, and based at the company’s head office in Rosebank, Johannesburg.
