HARARE, August 20, 2013 – Zimbabwe’s Liquid Telecom has become the first telecommunications company to deploy a cross border cutting edge transmission technology called Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) in the country.
DWDM is the latest technology for transporting extremely large amounts of data traffic over metro or long distances in telecom networks.
Liquid Telecom has deployed DWDM technology in trunk and ring topologies that pass through Harare, Gweru, Bulawayo, Beitbridge, and Masvingo then back to Harare.
With this technology, up to 80 separate wavelengths or channels of data can be put on to a single optical fibre. Each wavelength has a capacity of
10Gbps to 100Gbps.
Liquid Telecom now have multiples of 10Gbps capacity which ultimately provides unlimited capacity. The technology has been extended to Lusaka, Zambia, via Kariba (10Gbps upgradable to 80Gbps).
Wellington Makamure, Managing Director Liquid Telecom on Tuesday said: “This gives both the Zimbabwean and Zambian market high capacity access to the undersea cables that links Southern Africa to the rest of the world.”
He added: “The high speed technology goes across the borders into South Africa through Johannesburg to link two Data Centres (Teraco and Neotel). These two data centres are in turn linked to 5 undersea cables namely SEACOM, WACS, EASSY, SAT 3 and TEAMS.”
This development comes in at a time when bandwidth requirements are increasing for both home and business use. Liquid Telecom has prepared itself to handle huge increases in bandwidth demand.
For the business and enterprise market, video conferencing, access to centralised servers, database mirroring, and advanced Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software will work with extreme speeds.
For the home market, video streaming, Skype calls exchange of multimedia files, software downloads will run more efficiently on the Liquid Telecom Network.
Liquid Telecom Network supports large enterprise which have vast branch networks because of the large capacity and high availability that has been brought by DWDM.
Home users communication with friends and relatives in the Diaspora is real time and becomes very effective.
Besides offering higher capacity, DWDM brings more resilient transmission architecture. The Liquid Telecom Network will be available and is guaranteed 100% of the time.
A fault in one part of the network will not cause down time since the self healing rings work more efficiently in DWDM compared to its predecessor SDH. DWDM is a future proof technology in that it brings an almost limitless capacity to the network. Only terminal equipment upgrades are required in order to increase bandwidth capacity.
Bandwidth increases of more than hundred fold there will still be more than enough capacity to handle it.
