Cost of Living Declines

BizDayBizDay

HARARE  – The monthly cost of living for lower urban income families in Zimbabwe  declined by about 0.60% in July, says the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ).
According to the CCZ, the cost of living for a family of six in the urban areas decreased from the June  2013 figure of US$564,73 to US$561,32 as at the end of July.  The food basket decreased by about 2.28% while the cost of detergents increased marginally by 8 cents.
Decreases in prices were recorded in beef, which went down by 40 cents from $4.30 to $3.90, onions by 20 cents, flour by 11 cents, margarine by 19 cents, mealie meal by 16 cents, fine salt by 2 cents, cooking oil by 1 cent and bath soap by 2 cents.
Prices of other basic commodities which include bread, fresh milk and washing powder remained unchanged, said the consumer watchdog.  It said fluctuations could be attributed to the volatility in the major currencies, the US dollar and the SA Rand, as well as promotions by the major supermarkets.
